it was the result, i believe, and the president believes, of failed policies of george bush. that's what he walked into. very different world than anything in the campaign. here's what he did. he walked into office. we were shedding 750,000 jobs a month. you know all this. >> sean: wait a minute. >> let me finish. now we've created 5 million jobs over four years. >> sean: that's not true. that's not true, sir. sir, there are fewer americans working than when he took office. that is a fact. you get it right from the bureau of labor and statistics. here's the point, when he ran in 2008 he said it's the worst economy since the great depression. he told it was bad. he said and projected that if we pass a stimulus -- he's already in office now -- that by now he would have created 8.7 million jobs. but again, fewer americans working than when he took office. and he gave us $6 trillion in debt. why should we believe him? why won't you just admit these are simple basic truths? seems like the obama campaign can't face this reality. >> no, i think we face the reality. we were losing 75

he inherited a bad economy from george bush. many voters agree with that. nonetheless the numbers don't quite add up. what about mitt romney's claim about 23 million people unemployed? we need context and let me bring some tools up here to talk about this. median income in this country is about $51,000. here are categories we can look at. mid wage and low wage and high wage and what most of the people in the country are making right now. if you consider what happened during the recession. look. everyone lost jobs but the low wage jobs did not lose as much. when the jobs started to come back, look what happened? the low wage rose the most. so amongst the jobs we lost or gained, basically, we lost better jobs than what we regained. you have to consider that if you wean even come clos to mitt romney's number of 23 million. he is saying everyone is unemployed and given up on looking for work and everybody who is part-time who would like to be full-time in all actuality, although that adds up to about 23 million he is doing the same thing barack obama is doing.

george bush won for these arm of the vote. -- 40% of the boat. -- vote. now romney is pulling at best in the mid-20's. his own campaign has said they need to reach 30% in order to be competitive in the states or the latino vote will be critical. what the republican party has done is lurch to the right instead of george w. bush, john mccain. let's reach out and let's make immigration reform something we are for. he has promised a veto. he is for radical policy description, and the idea of making life so miserable that immigrants are purged from the country. this lurch to the right is hurting badly. their strategy means the southwest is out of reach because of this. they pulled out of new mexico. they have a shot in colorado and nevada. essentially, the hispanic strategy has been let's talk about the economy. the cuban americans are in florida and hope they can peel off enough of them. maybe that will be the trick. the fastest-growing group are the non-portrait in immigrants for whom this is a defining issue. i suspect he is glad to have a hard time winning

george h. w. bush in '92. all of these guys who had been in the presidency, they got on that debate stage and came face- to-face with the challenger. it is rattling. they all had a very difficult time getting through the first debate. in each case, they had to up their game as the series went forward. >> you say, "the morning after the debate, will the media the talking about knockout punches? who knows? a little boldness might make good politics." what do you mean? >> i mean this idea of not approaching this debate as an awful obstacle you have to get over but taking advantage of that opportunity. even for the guys like romney and obama who are used to being on television and addressing huge audiences, these are some of the largest audiences they will ever face in their entire political careers. it is a shame to not take advantage of that. i understand why they are reluctant to do anything to dramatic or too theatrical. on the other hand, it is a platform that could be taken advantage of if they so choose. i
